Alpacas… Then and Now.

When Alpacas were first imported into the US from South America it would have “cost” thousands and thousands of dollars to select, health cert., import, quarantine, and freight the Alpacas to the importing ranches. From there, each ranch would have “marked up” their imported alpacas according to quality and lineage and import region. Some of our first “imported” Alpacas cost us in the mid to high 20’s! Remember, those investors required “pay-back" on their up front investments as well as those US folks that purchased them to sell to us.

When we started our business in 1997 there were just under 4,000 ARI registered Alpacas in the US. Now in 2009 as of this writing there are approximately 156,374 Alpacas. We will have to add 3 to that from our ranch just this week!.

With this quantity of Alpacas in the country, there is no longer a need to charge the importation recovery fees! That's great news for people dreaming of owning Alpacas. Today, you can make your dreams come true. Now, Alpacas have become affordable!

ABOUT US

Sunburst Alpacas began as an idea in 1997. It was love at first sight for my husband Pete! Those big round eyes, that fluffy topknot! Those long skinny necks! Yes! They were shorn.... later we found out after some farm visits and open houses that these little guys were indeed fluffy all over! Shortly after our very first sighting of the allusive alpaca we too decided to start our own alpaca farm. By the following year we had purchased most of our breeding stock, had birthed our first cria and were well on our way!

It would be several years later, we decided we might just be able so sell one of our prized little alpacas. It was tough! Because up to now we were just “COLLECTORS” you might say! We put a lot of time into each alpaca, and we tend to fall in love with every cria!

My late husband Pete and I greatly enjoyed the lifestyle that comes with raising these wonderful animals. Sadly, Pete passed away in early 2003. My daughter Sherri and her husband Bruce now partner me with the ranch.

Our herd consists of a select group of foundation females, which is the heart of our operation as well as our studs, whom we seem to favor. Our Peruvian and Chilean bloodlines are from the best studs from around the country. Our alpacas, both male and female are available in a variety of the 16 colors recognized by the alpaca registry! If we don’t have your color we can help you locate it! Just ask.
